FAQs-General

Q. What makes Syracuse Development Academy unique?
A. Syracuse Development Academy (SDA) currently offers programs for boys and girls from ages 4 to 19 years old. SDA offers our players a chance to grow and develop both as soccer players and as individuals to their maximum potential in a high quality training environment, under professionally licensed coaches, at the highest level of competition possible and appropriate. SDA’s overall vision is to offer programs at all levels from competitive/ travel, premier soccer, amateur young adult level, through professional teams. Our long list of collegiate players and alumni that have played professionally and even on the national team level is a testament to our focus on player development and is what sets us apart from other organizations.

Q. What level of commitment is expected of a Syracuse Development Academy player?
A. Syracuse Development Academy players will be dedicated to the game and their development within a team environment in a professional and respectful manner to the game and the club. Our season for U13 and up runs from November 1 – mid July with additional program content for our U9-U12 teams.

Q. Can my child play other sports while being part of Syracuse Development Academy?

A. Yes. We do not frown upon athletes that play multiple sports and in most cases encourage players to get the diversity that is needed to fulfill their athleticism to determine what sport(s) are best for them.

Q. How far do teams travel for league games and tournaments?
A. Typically, Syracuse Development Academy (SDA) follows the United States Soccer Federation Guidelines for travel. Generally:
  • Ages 4 to 9 will travel within a one hour radius for tournaments and all leagues will be local.
  • Ages 10 to 12 will travel within a three hour radius for tournament competition with most leagues being local competition.
  • Ages 13 to 18 will travel where necessary to compete against appropriate competition.

Q. Where will teams train for indoor and outdoor?
A. Indoor training sessions will be held locally at one or more of the three local indoor facilities as appropriate. We have numerous outdoor venues at our disposal to choose from in multiple areas throughout the Mohawk Valley which will be utilized to conduct our training sessions.

Q. When are tryouts and player identification and can my child join SDA after the season begins if they’ve missed tryouts?
A. Tryouts for the club run from the end of July through early August for any given year and yes a player can join SDA after the season begins. If a player learns about SDA, or wants to make a transition from another club after the season begins, we will give that player an opportunity to train with their respective team for no cost or obligation and at the conclusion of the trial period they can join the team as long as the head coach, parents, and player all feel it’s a good fit.

Q. What additional costs will there be?
A.  Each participant must also purchase an SDA NIKE uniform kit (approx. $100 for 2 jerseys, 2 shorts and 2 socks).

Q. Does my child have to play age appropriate?
A. We encourage players to play age appropriate. There are individual cases where the club may feel that the best place for a player to develop would be to play at an older age group. This decision will be made by the Director of Soccer with input from the coaches involved with the individual player.

Q. Will players in the east be placed on teams in the west if there aren’t enough east players in a particular age group to form a team?
A. Our goal is to build teams in the east for boys and girls from U9-U18, comprised solely of players who reside in the east, and we currently have 5 teams in place that fit this objective. We will however ensure that all players who want to join our club regardless of whether they live in the east or the west have a place to play. If we don’t currently have a team that matches your child’s gender and age group in the east they will be offered an opportunity to try out for a team in the west and vice versa.

Q. Is SDA just looking to pull the strongest players from the east to the west?
A. No. This has never been nor will it be a part of our plan. However as a club we can now offer additional playing opportunities to children playing in the east and the west which don’t conflict with either team’s respective schedule. This ability to pool players for a select few Regional or National events is a benefit of substantial magnitude because it gives players from two teams the opportunity to combine forces for specific high caliber events that SDA has access to which neither team in of themselves may be deep enough to compete in or have enough families willing to commit to, and this is something no other club in the Mohawk Valley can offer.

Q. Who do I contact to sign my child up for SDA East or to learn more about the program?
